How We Rank Water Treatment Companies
Every company in our Top 7 is scored against the same six weighted criteria. This page explains what we measure, how much each factor counts, and where editorial judgment comes in.
The Six Criteria and Their Weights
Each company receives a score from 1 to 10 on every criterion below. Scores are multiplied by the criterion weight and summed to a 100-point scale, and the final list is ranked by total.

| Included water testing | 20% | Whether a professional water test is included free before any equipment recommendation, and how thorough that testing is. |
| Pricing transparency | 15% | Written, itemized quotes and clear answers about total installed cost, ongoing salt and filter costs, and service rates. |
| Service-area fit for Missouri | 10% | How well coverage lines up with Missouri homeowners, including well-water counties outside the metro cores. |
| Product range and equipment | 10% | Breadth and quality of softeners, whole-home filtration, and drinking water systems available. |
How Scoring Works
Our editors assign each score based on company and dealer materials, stated service areas, published policies, and direct checks of what a Missouri homeowner experiences when requesting a test or a quote. Weighted scores are summed, the list is ordered by total, and ties are broken by editorial judgment. The list is reviewed annually; the current edition was last reviewed in July 2026.

What We Do Not Do
- We do not publish star ratings or review counts we cannot verify.
- We do not invent pricing for companies that quote through local dealers.
- We do not remove a company from the list because it declines to work with us.
