Cloudy water does not point to one specific treatment system. The cloudiness may be tiny air bubbles, mineral particles, disturbed sediment, corrosion debris or material coming from a private well. Test cold water first. Then test hot water from the same faucet in a separate glass. Cloudiness found only on the hot side points toward the water heater, hot-water piping or a hot-side fixture component rather than the incoming household supply.

If both hot and cold water are cloudy at every fixture, investigate the source water, pressure equipment and any whole-house treatment equipment. If only one faucet is affected, remove and inspect its aerator. A deteriorating washer, supply line or aerator screen can release material locally.

Inspect the faucet aerator and filter housings

Close the drain or place a towel over it before removing small faucet parts. Unscrew the aerator and place its contents on a white surface. Grit that appears at several faucets suggests a broader plumbing or water-source issue. Material at one faucet may come from that fixture or its supply line.

If you have cartridge filters, inspect them according to the equipment instructions. Write down the cartridge type, installation date if known, direction of flow and visible condition. A cartridge that loads quickly is evidence of a sediment problem, but it does not identify the sediment or explain why it is entering the water.

Do not open a pressurized housing. Shut off the water, relieve pressure and follow the manufacturer's procedure. If the shutoff valves do not hold or the housing is damaged, stop and call for service.

Separate cloudiness from staining and scale

Cloudy water and cloudy residue are different problems. Water that looks clear in the glass but leaves a white film after drying may contain hardness minerals. Orange or brown staining may point toward iron or corrosion. Black deposits can have several causes, including plumbing materials and treatment media.

Wipe a dry fixture with a damp white cloth. If the material appears only on surfaces after water evaporates, collect information about hardness and dissolved minerals. If visible particles are present in freshly drawn water, focus on suspended material, plumbing debris or treatment equipment.

Know when laboratory testing is the next step

Arrange testing when cloudiness persists, returns repeatedly, changes color, appears with an unusual odor or begins after a change to a private well. Testing is also useful before buying equipment because visual inspection cannot reliably identify many water constituents.

Ask the laboratory which analyses fit the observations and water source. Describe whether the property uses a private well or public supply, where samples were collected, whether particles settle and whether the problem affects hot water, cold water or both. Follow the laboratory's bottle, handling and sampling instructions exactly.
